The catches are real but tolerable: it needs a current version of iOS, ad detection currently supports English-language shows only, and it's a young app that's still growing features like auto-downloads and playlists. Reviewers also note the skip behaviour doesn't trigger from car controls.

STFUAI: best free option on Android
STFUAI is an Android podcast player that detects unwanted segments on your device at playback time, and its ambitions go past advertising: it can also jump sponsor reads, self-promotion, intros and closing credits.
Because it downloads episodes like a normal podcatcher and only skips locally, shows still receive their download stats. The free tier covers the core skipping experience, which makes it the obvious first stop for Android listeners.
Skipper: the minimalist iPhone alternative
Skipper pitches itself on privacy: detection runs entirely on your device, with no cloud processing and no subscription. If drea's scan-first workflow doesn't suit you, or you want a second opinion on a stubborn show, it's the natural next try on iOS.

ZeroAds: keep your current app
ZeroAds isn't an app. It gives you a modified RSS feed per show, with ad segments already handled, which you add to whatever podcast player you already love. Queue, interface and listening history stay untouched.

AdSkipPro is an iOS podcast app that finds the ads once an episode has downloaded, then skips them at playback. Functionally it lands close to drea and Skipper; it's worth a look if neither of those fits, though it has less visible momentum than the others in this list.
The tools that don't work: DNS and browser blockers

What these tools can't do
Setting expectations saves you a refund request:
